Gotham Extra Narrow

The narrowest of the “natural width” Gothams.

As a typeface's design approaches extreme proportions, its visual themes begin to take a back seat to spatial considerations. Condensed fonts will favor consistent spacing above all else, a priority which manifests itself in Gotham Condensed through the addition of new visual strategies. On letters like C and S, stroke endings that were once sheared perpendicularly will end vertically instead; joins in lowercase letters that once appeared monolinear become palpably thinned.

On any continuum of font widths, there's a point at which designs cease to feel "natural" and begin to feel "condensed" instead. In the Gotham family, Gotham Extra Narrow is the last stop before that turning point. It shares all the characteristics of the wider Gothams, but is 20% narrower than Gotham Narrow (and 30% narrower than the regular width Gotham). Though well-suited to headlines and subheads, it shares with the wider Gothams a propensity for text sizes, and includes all the features required of a hard-working text face: a sound Book weight, tabular figures and fractions, and a healthy range of weights from Thin to Ultra, complete with italics throughout.

Using Gotham Extra Narrow

Gotham Extra Narrow for Websites

Online & Broadcast

Gotham Extra Narrow's height makes it useful on screen, where space is always at a premium. Website designers will find Gotham Extra Narrow especially useful for small but text-dense graphics, such as thumbnails, buttons, banner ads and skyscrapers. And broadcast designers will find the fonts good performers for all kinds of on-air graphics, including lower-third captions and OTS boxes.

Gotham Extra Narrow for Publications

Publications

Gotham Extra Narrow has the proportions of a classic headline face, but features something rare among slender sans serifs: its full range of weights includes matching italics for every style. (Your editor will thank you.) And the Black and Ultra weights in the Gotham Extra Narrow 2 package can be densely stacked, making them ideal not only for headlines but for covers. (Your publisher will thank you.)

Gotham Extra Narrow for Annual Reports

Catalogs & Annual Reports

Because it shines at small sizes, Gotham Extra Narrow performs admirably in text-heavy environments. Its compact bearing makes it useful in narrow sidebars and product listings, and the family's tabular figures recommend it to number-heavy applications such as annual reports, financial statements, catalogs, listings, and product documentation.

Gotham Extra Narrow for Signage

Signage

Its clarity makes Gotham Extra Narrow a good choice for a range of wayfinding applications, where its short ascenders and descenders help multi-line signs behave predictably. Gotham Extra Narrow maintains its legibility through its full range of styles, and offers a carefully-stepped palette of eight weights to help designers match the typeface to the sign's medium and its fabrication technique.
